Ian Partington's Bats:
Under 14's......sorry, under 15's coach Ian Partington has now puchased the bats financed this season by the sale of bacon rolls & raffle tickets. A Gunn & Moore ll Original Acadamy and a Kookaburra Blade are now part of the teams arsenal for the coming season. Well done Ian!

AGM:
Twenty souls attended this years AGM to listen to reports from the relevant committee members, team captains and action group leaders.Various rule changes, subscription increases and league memberships were voted in as were new committee members Sam Martin, who replaces Kevin Phillips (standing down) and Kate Morris, who becomes Junior Section Secretary.

Club AGM:
This year's club AGM will be held in the pavilion at 8pm on Thursday 27th November. All club members are welcome so please attend and excersise your voting power! Click here to view this year's agenda.

Senior Awards Dinner:
The awards dinner was a great success, enjoyed by over 80 members and guests. Lots of fun and empty bottles plus a hat-full of awards, details of which can be found in the Hall of Fame. Many thanks to everyone who contributed to a most enjoyable evening!

Sunday League Cricket:
The club is keen to guage your opinion on the Sunday side playing league cricket in the Chess Valley League. As well as the competitive edge of league cricket, there would still be a number of Sundays available for the established social games against old rivals. Lets have your views on the subject, either respond to leyhillcc@googlemail.com or speak to Andy Rennard, the Cricket Action Group leader.

Tea Watch:
Tea Watch is now up to date in Looser Balls.

Club Presentation Dinner:
Senior awards will be presented at the club's Presentation Dinner on Friday, 10th October at the Memorial Hall, Ley Hill. The evening will start with a drinks & canapes reception followed by a two course buffet dinner. The presentation will be followed by games and music. Tickets cost £25 per head, please see Andy Rennard to book your places.

Last Games of 2008 :
Although Saturday's side lost to Bourne End, Paul Green's Sunday side beat the Roving Reporters by 2 runs in a very exiting match played in glorious sunshine! Runs were hard to come by on a very firm track, Graham Harrison & Sam Helm showing the way with some very tight bowling.

Touring Opportunity with Chesham CC:
Chesham Cricket Club are looking for two last minute U14 replacements for their autumn tour to South Africa. Dates are from 23October till 5November. Details of the tour can be found here or on CCC's web site.

Sunday's News:
With Saturday's conference opponents pulling out, the only cricket last weekend was the Sunday side's foray to Seer Green to play old foes Jordans Taverners. On a perfect afternoon, an experienced Ley Hill side eased their way to victory with Lawrence Chamberlain scoring 105, taking 3 catches & a direct hit run-out running the show! As ever, the Taveners made us very welcome at a nearby hostelry where we had the oopportunity to remind their skipper that he dropped Lawrence before he had a run on the board!

Fine Weather Herralds More Cricket:

Better late than never, autumn sunshine saw over 500 runs scored at the Peroni Stadium where LHCC beat Ruislip Victoria in the last over of their friendly match. Three wickets each for Jon Lown & Ian Birkett and a solid 76 runs for Andy Rennard stole the headlines.

Over at Bellingdon, the thirds narrowly lost to a Phoenix Old Boys/Prestwood/LHCC conglomerate by 3 runs! Michael Morris became the first Ley Hill player to take a wicket with a white cricket ball (being trialled for the first time), Sam Martin ousted from behind the stumps by Jim Rainey (have a go if you think you're hard enough!) had his revenge by being responsible for four wickets & David Falconer recorded his maiden half century for the club!

As the fine weather continued, the Sunday side beat a travelling Pinner with runs from Steve Bell, Iain Stewart & Jon Lown who also took four wickets.

New Bats for the U14's:
The U14's raffle raised £188 which will go a long way towards two new bats for next years' U15's. Many thanks to Josh Wright, Alex & Christian Partington for their sterling work at Lords obtaining signatures for the bat, Terry Rothwell & Tom Jeffrey for selling all the tickets and of course the MCC for donating the second prize. Graham Wright won the signed bat & Colin Wright the visit to Lords. Well done everyone.

Its Official:
Mid Bucks League final results are now posted and I can reveal that LHCC first team finished 5th in the Premier Division, the seconds finished 4th in Division 1 and the thirds (after all the conjecture) topped Division 3 by 22 points as Potten End II's were soundly thrashed into second place by Widmer End SM II's who finished third. Well done to the whole club for taking the big step of entering three teams into league cricket, a decision which produced a memorable season with more juniors than ever appearing for senior sides, some names from the past tempted out of retirement and yet another season under the belt of the evergreen Jim Rainey. Congratulations one and all!

Third Team run riot to clinch the title:

On another very successful Saturday for Ley Hill CC, the icing on the cake goes to the third team who in their first season of league cricket topped Division 3 to surely win promotion! The still to be confirmed result, saw Saturday's side unravel Ballinger's openers who proved so difficult on their own ground. Once gone, the rest collapsed for a total of 76 inside 31 overs. It was almost over before tea but after 21 overs, Ley Hill were there. Well done everyone! Happy days!

The firsts & seconds secured an excellent double over Hughenden Valley to cement their mid-table positions in the premier & first divisions.

Celebrations were the order of the evening in the clubhouse afterwards, where a rowdy faction patiently waited till 2200hrs to munch their way through £240 worth of curry provided by the Delhi Durbar restaurant. Thanks guys!

A Very Busy Weekend at the Hill:

With a full league programme on Saturday, the annual fixture against Bellingdon on Sunday, the 6-a-side tournament on Monday and the Ley Hill music and beer festival over the weekend as well, it was always going to be a busy weekend for just about everyone. Especially champion glass recycler Paul Green!

The firsts missed out on turning over Knotty Green by 3 runs, the seconds & thirds both beat Cadmore End and a select eleven narrowly beat Bellingdon to win the 'Last Ball at Bellingdon' trophy. The 6-a-side once again passed through a bleary haze, your editor is still waiting on confirmation of which team actually won!

Other news is our intrepid chairman has returned from Turkey, just in time to save our second pitch from succumbing to nature and some high spirited fellows, no doubt euphoric over their A-S level results, ram raided our equipment store and stole two cans of fuel. Now I know prices have gone up but come on chaps.....

Seventy Not Out:
Saturday evening saw the legend that is Bill Phillips celebrate his seventieth birthday at the club with his family, friends and lots of CC members who were all eager to sample the fare on offer that had been roasting on a spit outside the club since mid-day! I'm certain that everyone wishes Bill health and happiness for the next ten years (at least!) and thanks him for his generousity over the bar on the evening. Well done also, chef Kev, MC Eleanor and barman Paul who all helped to make the evening a great success!

More Forthcoming Events:

A flurry of activity preceeds the end of the league season. Sunday 24August is the popular fixture against Bellingdon CC, Monday 25August (10am start) is the very popular 6-a-side tournament, Friday 29August, in a vain attempt for redemption is a friendly match against Emmanuel Church Chesham and following the last league game of the season on Saturday 30August is the ubiquitous curry night at the clubhouse.

Friday 5September is Junior Presentation Night, a fun filled evening with something for everyone. Awards, prizes, raffle, food, fun & games. The official proceedings start at 7.30 but the evening, weather permitting will be preceeded by an U11's match so feel free to turn up anytime after 5.30!

Tour Report Now In:
With the absence of any cricket played last weekend, scorecards & a report have been posted (find them under 'Other Matches') for the Somerset tour, as has the scorecard for the friendly match against the Crown. Many thanks Rohan for your post match hospitality!

U14's raffle:
U14's supremo Ian Partington has procured two excellent raffle prizes to generate funds to buy a U14 squad bat. More details here.

The Hill Look For Revenge:
Thursday evening at 5.30 sees the return golf leg of the Ley Hill Cricket Club/Golf Club challenge. Our cricketing heros will be hoping to reverse the rather embarrassing defeat by the golf club last month by turning over the opposition at their own game (as they did against us!).

Great Weekend for the Hill:
The first real cricket for three weeks saw all four Ley Hill teams win, the seconds because of a walk over, winning twice! The firsts and seconds are now fourth in their divisions and the thirds top theirs by five points! The Sunday side, including three sets of brothers (Chamberlain, Falconer and Peterson) crushed West Wycombe with hundreds by Lawrence Chamberlain and Craig Peterson (Craig's in a club record 51 balls!) and a creditable 76 by Richard Clarke.

Wednesday Match Nights:
As the season nears completion, junior coach supremo, Dave P has decreed that in place of coaching, Wednesday evenings will be match night. Open to all junior age groups, turn up as close to 6.00 as possible for impromptu games organised ad hoc on the night. Strictly for fun, lets finish the season in style.

Forthcoming Events:
Friday 8August we have a social game against the Crown public house, should be good for a laugh or two! Sunday 24August sees the welcome return of the Bellingdon fixture, has it been a year already? Bank holiday Monday 25August isthe date of the very popular 6-a-side competition. Team places are limited so please advise Paul Green soon if you wish to enter a team.

Weekend Results:
Only the Sunday side managed to play last weekend, albeit a reduced overs match. All Saturdays games were rained off which allowed those returning from Somerset a thankful extra few hours recovery time! News from the tour is noticable by its' absence at this time, we hope to update matters when everyone has been released on bail.

LHGC pictures:
Ley Hill Golf Club, still revelling in their victory, have posted some photos on their web-site. Click on the google alerts link to view them.

Last Two Weeks Results Now Posted:
During a two week dip in on-line editing, the LHCC tourists have been ripping it up in Somerset, the 1sts have had back to back wins over Chesham Bois & Haddenham, edging themselves further up the league away from the relegation zone. The 2nds craft a winning draw against Potten End, narrowly loose to Bradenham by 4 runs and are firmly esconced in the middle of their division. The thirds struggle to a losing draw against Potten End 2nds but beat Bradenham by 1 wicket to go top of Division 3.
Indifferent week for the Hill:
On Saturday the firsts lost, the seconds went into melt down but the thirds marched on (thanks to a 6fer from DP). Sunday saw over 400 runs scored to no avail as the game ended in a draw.

Junior Finals:

The U17's failed to beat High Wycombe in the South Bucks League final on Tuesday evening. Loosing the toss and the critical option to bat first our lads nethertheless justified their presence in the final and were a credit to their manager and the club. Read Ian Walter's report here. Very well done chaps!

The U15's failed to capitalise on Wooburn's low total in Saturday's semi and so missed out on a Stowe School finals day. Back luck chaps but a great season none the less! Well done Mr. Coles!

Ley Hill join League :
Ian Garland has unearthed the fact that Ley Hill were members of the Chesham & District Cricket League when it was formed in 1912! Click here for the fixture list for that first season. There is also a rumour that when the league folded, Ley Hill were the last winners and ended up with the League Cup! Watch this space.

Summer Tour:
Grumblings regularly heard at the Club concern the lack of a summer tour. Well, grumble no more! Pete Sweet is organising a tour this summer! Planned for the 30July until 2August in Somerset, more details can be found here.Tour 2008.

Ley Hill Leydies take off:
The whispers & rumours of a Ley Hill ladies team were realised last night with the first training session taking place under the close tutelage of LHCC 'Ladies Man@ himself....Mr Andy Rennard. The squad of thirteen ranged in ability from complete novices through experienced juniors to county players! Everyone enjoyed the experience & it was good to see that the ladies matched their male counterparts in at least one dicipline, the apres-session drinK! Tuesdays at 6.30 are the intended session times for any of you ladies who fancy getting one back on the old man.

MCC confirmation:
LHCC's Paul Green has been under immense pressure of late, worried that his stable shot, the 'reverse sweep' since being copied by Kevin Pieterson (& being shown on telly no less) would be banned by the powers that be. Fortunately Paul can breath easily as this press release reveals. The shot has been deemed legal but let this be a lesson learned. Do not teach your favorite sneaky, shot to cricketers who might execute it on TV to a watching world!

1968...a good year?
You tell us. Click here to find out!

Paul Green's Games Night:
Friday 11July sees Paul Green's Games night at the clubhouse. With both indoor & outdoor activities planned, weather permitting, it promises to be a fun night for everyone! Football, rounders, kwik cricket, dominoes darts & cribbage are the order of the evening, check the recent e-mail flyer for details.

Hill almost back to winning ways:
With thumping wins for the firsts & thirds and the Sunday game washed out, only the seconds failed to make it a clean sweep for 'The Hill.' The firsts' skipper, Craig Ottaway took the bowling honours whilst Steven Walter & Andy Rennard made light of Ballinger's bowling. Paul Green took the only wickets for the seconds with Gary Helm, best of the bunch with the bat. The thirds bowling figures were dominated by Lewis Thompson as Sam Martin and Dave Turberville hogged all the batting!

Finals galore:
The U17's having narrowly lost to Gerrards Cross in their league knock-out competition, redressed the ballance by beating 'The Cross' in the league semi-final play off! They now meet High Wycombe in the final, next Tuesday, 8July at Wycombe's ground at 6pm. All support will be greatly appreciated, come along and see the fruits of success of Ley Hill's junior coaching program and how 20twenty cricket should be played!

Semi-finals galore:
The U15's have won their league conference! Beating allcomers in a very strong division they now play Wooburn Narkovians this Sunday, 10am at Ley Hill in the league semi-final. All support will be welcome as if successful, the final will be against Chesham 'B' or Wolverton at Stowe School on Sunday 13July at 11am. Manager Tim Coles was unavailable for comment last night but I'm sure will be back to his laconic self on Sunday!

Seconds miss out on final:
Fielding a 'much more mature than usual' side (due to the clashing U17's semi-final, what price success eh?) the seconds narrowly failed to beat an enthusiastic Lacey Green 2's to reach the knock-out final. Loose bowling enabled Lacey Green to take advantage of the short boundary to overtake the Hill's score but every cloud has a silver lining and they subsequently spent a fortune over the bar! Heads up chaps, onwards & upwards!

Losing draws best of the weekend:
Losing draws for the 2's & 3's were the best LHCC could manage last weekend. With heavily depleated squads for various reasons (Witney, Magaluf, Pollux, I could go on!) the four sides struggled in the sun against strong opposition. League placings are the firsts in 8th place, the seconds in 4th place & the thirds in 3rd. Here's to next week!

Bad weekend for the Hill:
Funny game cricket. After last week's 'good weekend' all three Saturday sides lost this week & the Sunday sides opposition failed to show! Still lots of fun & runs in the hastily organised replacement, inter-club game. All the relevant scorecards & reports are up.

Ley Hill Back in Time:
The final installment of Ian Garland's illuminating & very enjoyable look back at Ley Hill history has now been posted. Covering 1955 till 1970, there should be a few names almost everyone should recognise. 1920-1932; 1932-1954; 1955-1970.

LHCC Missionary work:
Amidst a cloud of secrecy, recently married LHCC stalwart Paul Humphreys has been assigned to introduce the game of cricket to one of Britains smaller colonies..........America. Spirited away after a farewell torent of abuse towards the much liked Ballinger umpire, Paul has begun the quite frankly, hopeless task of teaching the Yanks to play a game they didn't invent. LHCC would like to wish Paul & Serena the very best of luck in their new home. Click here for the farewell interview.

BBQ a Roaring Success:
Following the U11's victory over Chesham Tigers (roaring success...geddit?) the summer barbeque at the 'Peroni Stadium' was a sell-out. Chef Rennard's new 'summer editions' burger relishes tempted the many guests to savour his creations which in turn was a contributary factor to Steward Green's bar stocks being once again sufficiently depleated to warrant a Saturday morning visit to Chesham to restock in time for the afternoon's matches! Well done and thank you to all who helped make the evening a great success!

The first team managed a creditable loosing draw against Monks Risborough in what otherwise would have been a clean sweep for LHCC. The seconds beat local rivals Bovingdon, the thirds beat other local rivals Prestwood and the Sunday side beat Langleybury on the last ball of the game!

The 'Extra Thirds' fall at Phoenix:
The third team failed to defend their Phoenix Tournament trophy last Saturday. Despite starting strongly and beating the hosts, they lost the next two games against Thorpe and Farnham Common. The following resume is from Dave Mortimer; "We should have done better and if Nandos had not beckoned Richard for the last game (he had starred in the previous two) and if we had not dropped umpteen catches in that game (poor Dave Channer missed two dollies fielding at mid-off, where he had been stationed after pulling his hamstring) and if Peet had not been run out without facing a ball and if......... Never mind, we have just got to go back next year and get it back!" Bad luck chaps.

Juniors march on:

Further excellent performances from juniors continue to hog the headlines! As a taster, this by Eleanor Phillips; " It was the most amazing finish to a cricket match I have ever seen! We needed 33 off the last two overs to win. We got 17 runs off the penultimate over and needed 16 off the last one. We scored 9 off the first 5 balls - Peter Crichton sacrificing his wicket so Craig Peterson had the strike. 1 ball left and 6 needed to tie the game. Craig missed the ball. Chalfont St Peter started celebrating, thinking that they had won, then realised that their umpire was signalling wide ball. One more valuable run to us, another ball to come and 6 now needed to WIN. And Craig did it! A beautiful 6 hit straight down the ground and our entire team invaded the pitch to congratulate their captain who was 84 not out!"

Meanwhile the search is on for the enchanted willow tree from which Lewis Thompson's magic bat was hewn! Ley Hill's newest batting star continues to terrorise opposition bowlers and passing birds!

Weekend results;
The first narrowly loose to Downley, Runswick and Craig Peterson staring with the bat. The seconds record a fine win against league leaders Ibstone, Chris Morris was top scorer (not a printing error!) and Sam Helm ripped through Ibstones batting. The thirds had a walk over in the league but failed to repeat last years victory at the Phoenix Tournament. The Sunday side's game against Great Kingshill was abandoned after one of the umpires was felled by a straight drive and taken to hospital. See match reports for further details.

Thirds March On:
LHCC third team were the only side to record a win this weekend. The Sunday side, on tour to Hyde Heath managed a draw but the ones & twos were both beaten. A return to batting form from Chris Jones saw off Widmer End SM's second string with the loss of only one wicket! Scorecards & reports are up now.

LHCC play host to CPS:
Wednesday 7May saw the inaugural Chesham Preparatory School match at Ley Hill Cricket Club. The school's U10's beat Ridgeway School in the reciprocal arrangement allowing the club to use the school's excellent indoor facility pre-season.

Memoirs of an ex-player:
Stan Channer played cricket for Ley Hill from the 1930's until 1989. These are some of his memories of the club written after he retired from the game. Our thanks go to his son David for his permission to publish this fascinating insight into the early days of Ley Hill Cricket Club. Stan Channer's Memoirs.

Weekend results:
Although Sunday's match was washed out, Saturday saw good results for the firsts & thirds. The seconds fell well short of Bradenham's 230 despite Ben Ford's unbeaten 81 and 4 wickets. The firsts with Gary Helm the oldest player (by quite a margin!) overturned Haddenham with solid performances from Craig Ottaway, Felix Chamberlain and Steven Walter. While the thirds, despite a shakey start dug-out a fine victory over Bradenham's seconds. Tight bowling all round eclipsed by Paul Green's (that man again!) 5 for 6!

The first team record the season's first win in a nail biter against Chesham Bois. The seconds and the thirds fall foul of the weather but Paul's Sunday side easily see off the opposition with exceptional displays by Will Holman & Jon Lown! Ley Hill juniors continue to post good results, notably Tim Coles U15's who demolished an understrength Amersham side.

High Scorers:
Although only two weeks into the new season, there have already been some performances worth a mention. Eleanor has produced the first High Scores listing for your perusal.

Good win for the U13's:
With a side very similar the one that finished strongly last season, the U13's under the watchful eye of Bruce Copestick beat a ten man Bovingdon side by 7 runs. The Hill appeared to be cruising until their old enemy '2 runs for a wide' reared it's ugly head again. Giving away 45 extras as part of Bovingdon's total of 67, the team need to start utilising players abilities where best appropriate. Fletcher, Cronin-Ramsey, McCarthy & Johnson all took wickets. Cronin-Ramsey, Copestick & DeSouza all reached double figures with the bat. Picture

Cricket Force Weekend;
The Cricket Force weekend where we spring clean our two facilities in preparation for the coming season was this year combined with the junior registration day. Both days went well with a number of job's completed in time for the first game this weekend. Highlights are that Mr. Green has his new, bigger & better bar (many thanks to Mark Kavanagh for his sterling work), we have a new store cupboard in the away changing room (many thanks to Craig Ottaway for his diligence) and the cricket square is looking fantastic under the watchful gaze of Craig Ringsell. Many thanks to everyone who took the time to turn up and muck in!

New Junior Web Section:
We are trialing a new dedicated junior section, please click on the 'Juniors' link to view and please send feedback and ideas to leyhillcc@googlemail.com. I would also be keen to receive any humourous photos people may have of club members, past or present!

Best Result Ever?:
Discovered deep in our 'Ley Hill Back in Time' feature, possibly the best result ever returned by a Ley Hill side? Way back in June 1922, Ley Hill beat Ashley Green by 163 runs. "What's so great about that" I hear you say. What if Ley Hill only scored 167 runs, does that make it more impressive? Check out the score card here.

Pitch Preparation:
With the start of the new season racing towards us, the club has secured the services of Craig Ringsell to prepare both grounds on a full time basis and we have purchased a new outfield mower to alleviate paying for Bellingdon to be cut. So we now need more volunteers for mowing duty at both grounds!

Action Groups:
The committee has decided to introduce four action groups to cover the developement and running of the club. Each group will be headed by a committee member who will be responsible for canvassing support from members and parents and will report directly to the main committee. Group leaders are as follows; Social & Fund Raising Action Group - Paul Green, Pavillion Action Group - Iain Stewart, Grounds Action Group - Nick Lee and Cricket Action Group - Andrew Rennard.

Junior Registration Day:
This year, junior registration will take place the afternoon of Sunday 13April at the clubhouse. We are hoping that not only will this ease the rush to sign everyone on but will also swell the ranks of willing helpers over CricketForce weekend. Download the 2008 registration form here.

2008 League Tables:
The new 2008 season league tables and fixtures are now on the League's web site. We have links at the bottom of this page. The first league game is on 3May. The first team are home to Ballinger, the second team are away to Waddesden and the third team are at home to Waddesden II's. The league's knock-out cups sees the first team at home to either Lacey Green or Downley on 10June and the second team at home to Haddenham II's on 3June.

New Season:
Although to be confirmed, the first game of 2008 is scheduled for 19April, this means the pre-season social will be on 18April. Come along and try out the newly plumbed showers! At last, wash your hands with hot water! Marvel at the new cupboard in the away changing room! Spend lots of dosh over the new bar! Possibly?

Top Scoreres:
That's it! It's over for another year. Click here for final 2007 Top Scorers list & here for the final 2007 Averages. Many thanks to Eleanor for another sterling job!

Post Codes:
In this modern age people no longer rely on concise, accurate directions from a friendly bobby on the beat. So to keep abreast of the latest technology our chairman has suggested that we provide the post codes of our two grounds to guide happless opponents to their doom! They're actually the post codes for The Crown and the lady that lives next door to Bellingdon but if you can't see a cricket ground from either of those locations, you shouldn't be playing cricket! Ley Hill Common HP5 1UY, Bellingdon Village Hall HP5 2XU.

Juniors Nets:
Junior nets will resume after the Easter weekend at CPS with sessions for the older group on 30March and 13April. The younger group have one remaining session on 6April. Sessions at Westbrook Hay remain unchanged, 5.30 till 7.00 for the over 14's and 7.00 till 9.00 for the adults.

Click here to see the job list.

Ley Hill-Back in Time:
Courtesy of Ian Garland, we present a fascinating look back at headlines of articles printed in the Bucks Examiner paper. Part one of this very large file covers 1920 - 1932. Subsequent additions will cover the years up to 1970. Close examination reveals a number of well known local familly names and what they were up to all those years ago! Many thanks Ian. 1920-1932

Adult indoor net sessions commence Sunday 16March at Westbrook Hay School, finishing Sunday 13April. Following on from the juniors, sessions are from 7.00 untill 9.00 and cost £3.00 payable on the night.

2008 League News:

The 2nd XI are promoted to Division 1 along with Ibstone, no-one was relegated. The thirds have been accepted into Division 3 along with Prestwood 2nds and Ballinger 2nds. Our Chairman, Robin Carr has been elected onto the League Committee (its OK he does know about it) because he loves going to meetings! Good luck to all our teams for next season!
