Match Report - 21 May 2002

Ley Hill Firsts were held to a second successive disappointing draw in their Mid-Bucks League Division One fixture at Widmer End. Tristan Alves (3 for 22) was well supported by Graham Harrison, Seb San Martin and David Viney as Widmer End were held to just 128 for 6 from their 45 overs. But Hill’s reply was even slower, and despite 50 not out from Jon Lown, the side could only muster 85 for 6 as the game was drawn.

Widmer End: 128 for 6 (Alves 3 for 22)

Ley Hill: 85 for 6 (Lown 50*)

Match drawn

It was a different story for the Seconds in their Division Four fixture with Widmer End Seconds. Batting first, Hill made 173 for 9 thanks to a blistering 73 from Kevin Phillips. In reply, Phillips completed an excellent all-round display with 3 for 8 to help reduce Widmer End to 7 for 5. Although they recovered from that disastrous start, more wickets from Keith Richardson (4 for 23) and Gary Helm (2 for 32) saw them dismissed for 104, handing Ley Hill a 69 run victory.

Ley Hill: 173 for 9 (Phillips 73)

Widmer End: 104 all out (Richardson 4 for 23, Phillips 3 for 8, Helm 2 for 32)

Ley Hill win by 69 runs

Ley Hill’s Sunday eleven enjoyed an eight-wicket win over Harrow Wayfarers thanks to an excellent all-round display by Keith Strickland. He first took three catches as Harrow were dismissed for 118, Julian Eagle the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 37. Strickland then hit 67 not out, joined by Keith Brewer (40 not out) as Hill cruised to 121 for 2.

Harrow Wayfarers: 118 all out (Eagle 3 for 37, Green 2 for 0, Ward 2 for 27)

Ley Hill: 121 for 2 (Strickland 67*, Brewer 40*)

Ley Hill won by 8 wickets

Match Report - 5 June 2002

Ley Hill Firsts crashed to a disappointing 49 run defeat at Monks Risborough in the Kookabura Mid-Bucks League Division One. Hill’s bowlers were again on top form as Risborough were pegged back to 129 for 9, Tristan Alves the pick of the bunch with 3 for 19. But Hill’s batsmen again let their bowlers down badly, with only Andy Rennard’s 36 helping the team to any sort of run chase. But only one other player could make double figures as Hill subsided to 80 all out

Monks Risborough: 129 for 9 (Alves 3 for 19)
Ley Hill: 80 all out (Rennard 36)

Monks Risborough won by 49 runs

It was much the same story for the Second Eleven in their Division Four match against The Lee. Batting first, Hill could only muster 74 all out, Rob Fuller hitting 28 as The Lee’s veteran bowler Brian Monk returned 6 for 5 from just 3.3 overs. The Lee cruised to 75 for 3 in reply, despite Patrick Ward’s 2 for 9.

Ley Hill: 74 all out (Fuller 28)

The Lee: 75 for 3 (Ward 2 for 9)

The Lee won by seven wickets

Ley Hill’s Sunday eleven won a good friendly match against Abbots Langley. First Karan Pradhan and Paul Green took three wickets apiece as Abbots Langley were dismissed for 142. Jon Lown then hit 51 not out as Hill eased to 143 for 3 and victory by seven wickets.

Abbots Langley: 142 all out (Pradhan 3 for 33, Green 3 for 32)

Ley Hill: 143 for 3 (Lown 51*)

Ley Hill won by seven wickets

Match Report - 18 June 2002

Ley Hill Saturday Firsts crashed to their third successive defeat in the Mid-Bucks League Division One, falling by six wickets to Downley thanks to another dismal batting performance. Hill never recovered from a sluggish start and only Nick Lee with 37 helped to push them to 129 for 7 from their 45 overs. A couple of wickets from Andy Rennard (3 for 22) put Hill in contention, but Downley eventually cruised to 130 for 4 and victory by six wickets.

Ley Hill: 129 for 7 (Lee 37, Rennard 25)

Downley: 130 for 4 (Rennard 3 for 22)
Downley won by six wickets

The Second Eleven showed how it should be done with a stunning six wicket win over Downley Seconds in Division Four. Bowling first, Will Rothwell took 3 for 21 from 12 excellent overs as Hill started well, but Downley eventually reached 151 for 4, setting a youthful Ley Hill side a tough target. But Chris Jones was more than up to the challenge, belting a brilliant 105 as Hill raced to 152 for 4 from just 28 overs.

Downley: 151 for 4 (Rothwell 3 for 21)

Ley Hill: 152 for 4 (Jones 105, Craddock 24)

Ley Hill won by six wickets

Ley Hill lost their Sunday fixture to Hawridge and Cholesbury by seven wickets. Batting first, Hill could only muster 99 all out, Chris Jones top scoring with 27 and Hawridge bowler Zafran ending the innings by taking four wickets in four balls. Hawridge then raced to 100 for 3, Taj hitting 44.

Ley Hill: 99 all out (Jones 27)

Hawridge: 100 for 3

Hawridge won by seven wickets

Match Report - 26 June 2002

Ley Hill Firsts recorded their first win in four games against Prestwood in the Kookaburra Mid-Bucks League Division One on Saturday thanks to a fine bowling and fielding performance. Zimbabwean Tristan Alves was the star of the show in his final game before returning to his native country, taking 5 for 30 in 12 excellent overs. He rounded off the innings by taking two wickets in two balls, leaving him on a hat-trick as he heads home. It could be the longest gap between hat-trick balls in history! Prestwood were skittled for just 58, and a rapid 23 not out from Keith Brewer saw Hill to 60 for 3 in reply.

Prestwood: 58 all out (Alves 5 for 30, Lown 3 for 11, Ottaway 2 for 11)

Ley Hill: 60 for 3 (Brewer 23*, Fuller 20)

Ley Hill won by seven wickets

There was no such luck for the Seconds in their Division Four fixture with Frieth Seconds. Batting first, Tim Coles hit 56 as Hill posted 170 for 9, but Frieth made light work of the run chase, cruising to 171 for 3 with plenty of overs in hand.

Ley Hill: 170 for 9 (Coles 56)

Frieth 171 for 3 (Richardson 2 for 40)

Frieth won by seven wickets

Match Report - 2 July 2002

Ley Hill Firsts continued their seasons of mixed fortunes in the Kookaburra Mid Bucks League Division One with a narrow 30 run defeat to Westcott. Tight bowling from David Viney (3 for 44) and Craig Ottaway (2 for 33) first kept Westcott down to a respectable 217 for 8. In reply, Andy Rennard (39) and Nick Lee (36) kept Hill in the hunt, until a flurry of wickets ended the chase. Two wickets fell in the final over, with Paul Green given out dubiously lbw off the final ball of the match to end the innings on 187 and hand Westcott victory.

Westcott: 217 for 8 (Viney 3 for 44, Ottaway 2 for 33, Eagle 2 for 44)

Ley Hill: 187 all out (Rennard 39, Lee 36, Brewer 28)
Westcott won by 30 runs

The Seconds also went down to a close defeat, losing out to Booker Seconds by two wickets. Graham Harrison hit 36 in Hill’s 178 for 8, and paceman Gary Helm took 5 for 59 as Booker scraped to their target.

Ley Hill: 178 for 8 (Harrison 36, Craddock 25)
Booker: 179 for 8 (Helm 5 for 59, Harrison 2 for 37)

Ley Hill: 89 all out (Parkin 18)

Cublington: 245 for 6 (Pradhan 4 for 60)

Ley Hill: 228 for 6 (Strickland 128*, Lown 35)

Match drawn

Match Report - 17 July 2002

Ley Hill First Eleven pulled off an excellent 80 run win over Flackwell Heath in the Kookaburra Mid Bucks League Division One on Saturday. Andy Rennard struck a battling 96 not out as Hill posted 195 for 4 in their 45 overs. He followed up with 2 for 29, but the real star of the bowling display was Sohail Khan, with excellent figures of 4 for 32 from 11 overs of superbly controlled spin. Heath were eventually dismissed for 115 with seven overs in hand.

Ley Hill: 195 for 4 (Rennard 96)

Flackwell Heath: 115 all out (Khan 4 for 32, O’Neill 2 for 22, Rennard 2 for 29)

Ley Hill won by 80 runs

Ley Hill Seconds meanwhile pulled off a brilliant three wicket win over Cadmore End in Division Three. Craig Ottaway responded to being dropped to the Seconds by taking 4 for 37 as Cadmore were dismissed for 218 in 39 overs. In reply, Paul Humphreys hit a rapid 79 as Hill set off in chase, but the side then collapsed to 126 for 7. But skipper Dave Peterson and new signing Rob Thompson then put on 94, a club record for the eighth wicket, as Hill reached their target without further loss.

Cadmore End: 218 all out (Ottaway 4 fr 37, Thompson 3 for 46)

Ley Hill: 220 for 7 (Humphreys 79, Thompson 56, Peterson 27)

Ley Hill win by 3 wickets

Ley Hill’s Sunday side lost out to Chelsea Nomads by five wickets. Another club record partnership fell during Hill’s innings, Jon Lown and Graham Harrison putting on 66 for the ninth wicket and edging out the club’s previous highest, 64—set as long ago as 1983—by just two runs. But despite Lown following up his 57 not out with 3 for 45, Hill’s total was never likely to be enough.

Ley Hill: 137 for 8 (Lown 57*)

Chelsea Nomads: 143 for 5 (Lown 3 for 45, O’Neill 2 for 47)

Chelsea Nomads win by five wickets

Match Report - 31 July 2002

Ley Hill slipped to another disappointing defeat in their topsy-turvey season in the Kookaburra Mid-Bucks League Division One. Taking on Lacey Green, Hill bowled well in the latter stages to restrict their opponents to 189 for 9, spinner Ian Birkett taking 5 for 39. But the top order batting failed to deliver again as Hill subsided to 131 all out, the only highlight being an entertaining 44 from pace bowler and number 11 specialist Craig Ottaway.

Match Reports - 3 September 2002

Ley Hill Firsts reached safety in the Kookaburra Mid Bucks League Division One on Saturday, despite going down to a narrow defeat at promoted Westcott. Hill picked up enough bonus points to keep themselves ahead of rivals Lacey Green and Monks Risborough in the battle to avoid the drop.

But it was only thanks to a sterling performance that Hill scraped together the points they needed. Losing the toss and put into bat, Hill collapsed disastrously to 10 for 3. Skipper Jon Lown then played a gritty captain’s knock of 59* to haul the situation around, and Nick Lee’s 25 and Martin Leadbitter’s 24 pushed Hill to 155 for 6. Westcott got off a fine start, but three brilliant catches pegged them back. Three wickets from Craig Ottaway and two from that man Lown pushed Hill to within sight of victory, and a further brilliant catch by Karan Pradhan removed Westcott’s danger man. But with just an over to go, Westcott’s number nine edged the winning runs over gully to end Hill’s season on a losing note.
