Ley Hill vs Ruislip Victoria, 13th September 2003

Nick Lee

Ley Hill enjoyed a comfortable victory over a Ruislip Victoria side of undoubted quality, with old-timers Jon Lown, Keith Brewer and Andy Rennard leading the way.

The Hill elected to field on a drying pitch and picked up a wicket with the second ball of the game.  Goodchild tamely deposited an Az Shakoor long hop into the strangely-cupped hands of Ian Webb at point to give Az his 50th wicket of the season, an excellent achievement.  Bailey and Willcox made steady progress but their running became progressively more bizarre, culminating with Bailey calling for a single after pushing the ball no more then three yards down the track.  Willcox was well short of his ground when the direct hit from wicketkeeper Lee came in.

Ansari (A) came to the wicket and played some glorious drives down the ground, each accompanied with a full commentary of the ball, the shot and the fielding.  However, the introduction of the bronzed Lown (left) and Kash Shakoor initially stemmed the flow of runs and then led to a flurry of wickets.  Lown bowled beautifully for his four wickets and was on a hat trick, although mention must be made of Shakoor's effort.  Bowling spin, he accounted for the two Victoria dangermen, the second to an astonishing catch by Mortimer who was hiding almost directly behind the umpire at the bowler's end.  The innings fell away with no Victoria further batsmen reaching double figures and Will Rothwell bowling four balls to take 2 for 2, including N. Saeed who allegedly plays a high standard of cricket but was not quite good enough to keep a straight one out.

After a hirsute tea, Hill openers strode out with a target of just 140 in mind. Mortimer (right) managed to be run out for the second successive week, this time running on a misfield after being prompted by the umpire to take another Mortimer: crazyrun!  This only brought Brewer to the wicket who was immediately into his stride with a flurry of boundaries all around the ground.  There was an air of inevitability of the loss of Jones with the score at 48 - stumped after missing the trademark walking defensive shot that is becoming a trademark, but Rennard picked up the baton and the scoring rate didn't drop.  Brewer subsequently reached his 50 in just 40 balls.  It looked for a while as if the target would be reached in under 20 overs, but as 140 came ever nearer and minds turned to end of season averages, the runs came in just ones and twos.  Eventually, the game was sealed with Brewer finishing on 73 and Rennard on 36.

Ruislip Victoria: 139 all out (Lown 4-41, Will Rothwell 2-2, Kash Shakoor 2-41)
Ley Hill: 140 for 3 (Brewer 73 not out, Rennard 36 not out)
Ley Hill win by 7 wickets

Man of the Match: A close call between Lown and Brewer, although Frothy gets it for his clinical innings.
Clown of the Match: Dave Mortimer for running when the umpire suggested that it might be a good idea.
