Ley Hill 2nds v Bradenham, Saturday 24th May 2003

Tom Holman

Chris Jones' second eleven racked up their second win of the season, holding their nerve to chase down a testing target in the penultimate over.

Green: played outside his normal role, and it showedTemperamental all-rounder Az Shakoor was the star of the show, following his five-wicket haul with a crucial 82 in a virtuoso display. It did not start well for the youngster, who sent wicket-keeper Paul Green scrambling (and failing) to collect a succession of wides as Hill conceded a massive 36 extras. But Shakoor soon found his line and took all but one of the wickets to fall as Bradenham reached 183 for 6 from 42 overs.

Skipper Jones set the tone for the chase with a typically forthright 39, but Shakoor stole the show in his swashbuckling 82. He fell with 30 runs still needed, but Keith Richardson steadied the wobbling ship with a suitably mature 24 not out. Calling on all his 50 years of experience he nudged Hill home in partnership with Dave Peterson and struck the winning runs with just 10 balls left. The volatile all-rounder then celebrated by stripping to the waist and jubilantly cart-wheeling round the boundary in a lap of honour before buying champagne for all his team-mates.*

Bradenham: 183 for 6 (Shakoor 5 for 39)
Ley Hill: 185 for 5 (Shakoor 82, C Jones 39, Richardson 24*)
