Ley Hill v Frieth, 26th July 2003

Tom Holman

The Seconds were cruelly denied almost certain victory by the rain at Frieth, a ground which always seems to attract the worst weather in the area. Hill had posted 159 for 9 after batting first, a total that is equivalent to about 350 on any other ground, with Az Shakoor leading the way with a typically robust 40. In-form Andy Spinks chipped in with 26, and Brian Puddephatt knocked 21 to continue an excellent season. Keith Richardson led Hill's victory charge with 2 for 39, and Az Shakoor grabbed two wickets in his first two overs. But it was all in vain - with Frieth reeling on 85 for 6 the rain came to restrict Ley Hill to a winning draw.

Ley Hill 159 for 9 (Az Shakoor 40, Spinks 26)
Frieth 85 for 6 (Az Shakoor 2 for 2, Richardson 2 for 39)
A rain-affected winning draw for Ley Hill.

Man of the match: Az Shakoor, for 40 runs and two quick wickets, secured in typically combative style
Clown of the match: Frieth's aptly named bowler McCloud
