LEY HILL MAKE WIDMER
FIGHT
When opening batsman Kash Shakoor’s wicket fell with the first ball of the match, Ley Hill knew they were in for a tough game against Widmer End. Put into bat on a very unfriendly wicket, the Hill struggled to make any headway, finding themselves 46-8 in the 30th over. So difficult was the pitch they had faced 110 deliveries before their first boundary – and they were byes. Only two batsmen made double figures – Humphreys (11) and Ollie Runswick (one of five juniors who have claimed a place in the Ley Hill 1st XI) who scored an admirable 29.
Widmer took full advantage of this bowler’s wicket finally bowling Ley Hill out for 81 off only 36 overs. Mushuraf bowled his full quota of 12 overs conceding only 15 runs whilst taking 3 wickets. This terrfific feat was upstaged, however, by am astonishing 5 wickets for 6 runs in 5.1 overs by Degelas.
With such a low total to chase and 54 overs
to get the runs, Widmer knew if they kept their heads they could claim
victory. But what works for one team often works for another and Ley Hill
also produced two superb bowling efforts: captain Kevin Phillips taking 5-22 and
Rob Thomson bowling all 12 of his overs for only 14 runs – but, sadly, no
wickets. An inspired and careful innings of 32 by Lewis brought Widmer
home safely with a final score of 83-6 and a victory by 4
wickets.
