FIRST BLOOD TO LEY HILL IN DIVISION 3
Ley Hill 258-7 (45 overs); Brentham 227-10 (43 overs)
To Ley Hill's surprise, we find ourselves playing in Division 3 of the Chess Valley Sunday League this season, having apparently jumped from Division 5 and by-passed Division 4 completely! In the first match of the season, visitors Brentham won the toss and put Ley Hill into bat. Ollie Runswick fell cheaply for only 8 runs, but Craig Peterson stayed put and ended up with 84. Other top scorers were Craig Ottaway with 61; wicket keeper Max Lee with 57 (taking him to 500 plus runs since he began playing for Ley Hill - and he is still in his teens!) and Ben Woodbridge with 28. Pick of the Brentham bowlers was J. Solomon with 3-39. In reply, Brentham made a terrible start when Craig Ottaway took 2 wickets in the opening over of the innings. They then settled down and managed to score 38 runs before captain J. Hitchcock was run out on 25. This brought P. Jadhav to the crease and he was still there in the 42nd over of the game before being stumped off a wide ball (Max Lee) bowled by Ben Ford. Jadhav 84 from 87 balls. He was ably supported by M. Butt (No 6) and J. Solomon (No 7) who scored 31 and 43 respectively, but once they were both caught out, all hope of Brentham reaching the Ley Hill total faded. It was however an exciting run chase and the Brentham players never gave up trying to reach that elusive 259 needed to win. Pick of the Ley Hill bowlers was newcomer Tim Radford who took 4-44.
