EFFORTLESS INNINGS BY PELICANS BUT LEY HILL HANG ON GRIMLY FOR DRAW
By Eleanor Phillips
Missenden Pelicans 260-4; Ley Hill 143-7 (timed game)
Pelicans seemed in a class of their own when facing the Ley Hill bowling on Sunday. After opener Rehman departed for 20, having been bowled by Henry Sussum, the Numbers 2 and 3 batters (Nicols and K. Kankate) put on 148 runs between them before Kankate was beguiled into a stumping from the bowling of Paul Green. He had scored 93 runs and his partner Nicols ended up 97 not out. With contributions from other batters, Pelicans ended up having scored 260 for 4 from 36 overs. Sussum returned the best bowling figures with 1 for 47.
Ley Hill’s innings can be summed up as “too few runs scored too slowly”. Since this was a “timed” game (i.e. 20 overs from 5.30 pm), I suspect a number of the players – realising they had no hope of reaching the Pelicans total – were already going for the draw. Top scorer was Henry Sussum with 30 (he well deserves his Young Player of the Year award), followed by Paul Eckersley with 22 and Joe Yerrell with 20. Best of the Pelicans bowlers was Walters with 4 for 37 .
