THIRD TIME (UN)LUCKY FOR U-17s
Ley Hill 131-6 (20 overs); Great Kingshill 135-8 (19.1 overs)
It has been a very difficult season for our Under 17s, with a number of other clubs dropping out of matches due to difficulties filling teams, but some promising players have emerged in the three matches Ley Hill have succeeded in playing. In their third and final game of 2017, the U-17s faced a team from Great Kingshill which had a very similar make-up to our own – 17 year olds down to 10 year olds!
Ley Hill batted first and captain Luke Bouchier chose to open with himself and brother Alfie. Unfortunately they both went for just 4 runs apiece, but this brought another pair of brothers – Alex and Jamie Woodley – to the crease. 65 runs later and Alex was out for 26 runs from 20 balls, whilst brother Jamie stayed at the crease until he was asked to retire on 53 runs from just 30 balls. His innings included 4 fours and 5 sixes and he achieved a strike rate of 176.66. Liam Wharton entertained us by hitting out at everything and Joseph Lewin and Henry Sussum did not disgrace themselves with some polished batting. It is easy to see when watching which young players are regularly in the all age teams. The innings concluded with Freddie Ventham unfortunately being run out off the very last ball. Ley Hill 131 for 6 – their highest score of the season. The wickets were well shared around the Gt. Kingshill bowlers, with the best bowling figures coming from M. Colbeck (1 wicket for 5 runs from 3 overs).
Ley Hill chose to open the bowling with Alex Woodley, who took two wickets (both bowled) in his second over. With the Gt. Kingshill openers both dismissed, B. Souter came to the crease and proceeded to hit 52 runs before being asked to retire. (Six 4s and two 6s). He scored the bulk of the Gt. Kingshill runs, the remaining eight batsmen only managing 34 runs between them. Woodley finished up with 3 wickets for 25 runs from 4 overs and Lewin with 2 wickets for 18 runs from 4 overs. It was an exciting finish however. We went into the final over with the scores level. Gt. Kingshill needed 4 runs whilst Ley Hill needed 2 wickets – and it was Gt. Kingshill who came out the winners.
