UNDER-14s HAVE EMPHATIC WIN OVER CHALFONT ST PETER
Chalfont St Peter 68-9; Ley Hill 72-3
On what became an autumnal drizzly evening, Ley Hill U14s delivered an emphatic 7 wicket victory in their first league match of the season. This was not without a number of little areas to develop and improve, but having a squad of high spirited and cohesive players who all want to have a go, progress is always rapid.
LH lost the toss and CSP elected to bat. Typically tidy opening overs from Thomas and Henry kept things under control and wickets fell at regular intervals all the way through after their captain had been removed for a lusty 24. The ground fielding was EXCELLENT - we had two run outs from direct hits of 20 metres and more, so well done to Benji and Archie; James also had a direct hit but the batsman had just made his ground. So, with LH being very sporting and accommodating an U11 batsman with some appropriate bowling, CSP managed to post 69 for 9 which was a lot better than the 50 for 9 at the end of the 18th........
The LH batting card is really a simple story. Skipper Spiers elected to make sure that those who had not batted opened up the innings. Sadly it looks like they need more time in the nets as we were 1 for 3 after 9 balls with the 1 being a wide. Basher Veall then strode purposefully to the wicket and planted his first ball through cover for a faultless 4...this was the end of the good start for CSP as he then manoeuvred the strike with Sam (8*) effectively and ended up with a small flurry of bigger shots to gallop across the finishing line with plenty of overs to spare. He finished 46* with 2 x 6 and 6 x 4.
This match showed the real benefit of having a squad who are all the same age. Their bonding is superb and the camaraderie will stand them in good stead for years to come. We even had the excellent and buoyant services of Sumeet who was the 12th man and fielded for the time he was available with his customary gusto.
Holmer Green next Thursday......... (Many thanks to Ivan Veall for writing this report).
