UCS OLD BOYS 198 for 10; LHCC 131 for 10
Win for the visitors
The first game of the season saw a mixed XI playing at home to UCS Old Boys. Not having actually been present, however, I can only give you an outline of the match. UCS Old Boys won the toss and elected to bat. A wise decision as they did not lose a wicket until they had 91 on the board. Their two openers, Kartihk and Goldsmith made 32 and 80 (or 81 – the score book is unclear on this point) respectively. The middle order struggled, with the next four batsmen only adding 19 runs to the score, but a quickfire 25 from Ward at number 7, plus an additional 22 runs from the remaining batsmen saw UCS Old Boys end their 40 overs on 198 all out, having lost the last wicket in the final over. Ley Hill wicket takers were Lucas Batt with 3 for 27, Donald Petrie (yes – Donald not Dougie) 2 for 39, Tristan Reynolds 2 for 23 and Henry Sussum 1 for 24.
Ley Hill opened their innings with Jon Lown (who else?) and Craig Peterson, who amassed 59 runs between them before Craig was dismissed on 38. Jon hung on grimly before going on 48 with the score on 110. Ley Hill’s final score was 131, so the remaining 9 batsmen were dismissed for a paltry 21 runs. The only other batsman to reach double figures (29) was Justin Hutchins with the remaining 8 batsmen sharing 6 ducks and just 5 runs between them. Star bowler for UCS Old Boys was definitely Crofts who took 6 for 20; he was assisted by Goldsmith with 2 for 5, Vignoles 1 for 7 and Ward 1 for 28.
