BACK TO WINNING WAYS
Welford Park 188-10; Ley Hill 190-7
After the excitement of the knock-out final the evening before, sanity was restored at Ley Hill on Saturday 21st July when Welford Park paid their first ever visit to Ley Hill. By now, after 6 weeks without rain and blazing sun, the grass on the outfield was non-existent and the bare ground reflected the heat back at the players ferociously.
Welford Park won the toss and gratefully took the opportunity to bat in the searing heat. By the time their first three batters had come and gone for 24 runs however, they must have wondered if it was the right decision. Fortunately for them, their number 4 – captain Will Herrington – showed his staying power by staying at the wicket for 138 minutes and scoring 89 runs. He almost made it to the end of the innings – being out with the score on 171 and Welford Park all out for 188.
They had, however, only made use of 37 of their permitted 52 overs, so since these are 100 over matches, the unused 15 overs were added on to Ley Hill’s 48 overs, giving them a maximum of 63 overs in which to better the score. Best of the Ley Hill bowlers was Lewis Thompson with 3 for 46, but mention must also be made of Scott Peterson, who bowled 6 overs for just 9 runs and took 2 wickets in the process.
Skipper Craig Peterson dropped himself down the order as he had injured his right shoulder whilst fielding at slip when he went for a tricky catch on the iron-hard ground, so he opened with Ben Moultrie-Ford and wicket keeper Max Lee. Lee rose to the occasion and tenaciously worked his way through the Welford Park bowlers, scoring a very stylish 77 not out and carrying his bat for the entire innings. He saw six partners come and go at the other end, the highest scoring of whom was Lewis Thompson with 27, followed by Chris Morris with 23. Just 36 of their 63 overs used up and Ley Hill had cantered home to yet another win. Chris Fox returned the best bowling figures for Welford Park with 2 for 35.
