SECONDS TOP 200 WITH SCRATCH TEAM
By Eleanor Phillips
Ley Hill 204-10; Wendover 2nds 205-2
With some of the 2nd XI players having been whisked off to Harpsden because half the 1st XI had gone on holiday, this was a hastily put together team which nevertheless – under the circumstances – performed well.
Wendover won the toss and put Ley Hill into bat. Stand-in skipper Iain (Jumbo) Stewart opened with Jon Lown and Chris Jones. Joint top scorers were Chris Jones – enjoying another comeback from retirement – and Brad Norton who has been excelling himself on Sundays – both of whom scored 45. They were followed by Jon Lown with 33, Ivan Veall with 22 not out and son Tom Veall with 21. The rest never made it into double figures.
Wendover’s turn to bat and it initially looked promising for Ley Hill when Joseph Lewin removed opener Jackson for just 6 runs in his second over when Wendover were on 18. The optimism was premature however as Harrington (79) and Holmes (56) had a second wicket stand of 175 before Harrington was caught Ross James, bowled Tom Veall with the score on 193. It was nearly all over however and Wendover got the winning runs in the following over.
