2nds BEATEN BY 10 MEN
Challoners 265-6; Ley Hill 170-6
The hottest day of the year so far (the thermometer on my clock was registering 34o in the shade) and skipper Kevin Phillips loses the toss so Ley Hill are fielding in the heat of the afternoon. It was one of the Challoners’ players, however, who was overcome by the heat and forced to retire from the crease.
Challoners’ skipper Wood had no such problem. He opened the batting and scored 126, taking the score to 237 before being out lbw to Tom Veall. He was ably supported by D. Charlton (35), A. Mahmood (41) and S. Ali (20) and the 10 man team finished their 40 overs on 265 for 6.
Pick of the Ley Hill bowlers was definitely Tom Veall who took 3 for 37.
Ley Hill made a disastrous start to their innings and lost the first three wickets with the score on only 10 runs. Brad Norton stayed put however and with Jon Lown (batting down the order due to a niggling injury) had a 4th wicket stand of 58 before he was lbw Mahmood for 48 runs. Lown continued at the crease ably supported by Phillips until the latter was caught and bowled D. Charlton for 27 – another good partnership of 57, then Lown continued until the end of the innings when he ended up on 41 not out.
Pick of the Challoners’ bowlers was Mahmood with 3 for 29. This was a match where Extras played a leading role. There were 30 added to the Challoners’ innings and 32 added to Ley Hill.
