TRAGEDY AT HADDENHAM
By Eleanor Phillips
Haddenham 177-6; Ley Hill 159-2
Ley Hill 2nds went into the final match of the season hoping they could stay clear of the relegation zone of Division 2 of the Mid Bucks League.
Haddenham batted first and by the 26th over of the match, were on 177 runs, having lost 6 wickets. Their top scorer was R. Butt with 65 runs. Ley Hill skipper Kevin Phillips decided on a change of bowling and tossed the ball to 15 year old Freddie Ventham, returning to cricket after breaking a thumb earlier this season. However, Ventham stumbled and fell to the ground whilst running in to bowl his first ball and was so badly injured that he could not be moved. An ambulance was called for (and took nearly one and a half hours to arrive) and young Freddie was taken off to Stoke Mandeville Hospital along with his parents, who had been sent for and arrived some time before the ambulance did.
By mutual agreement, it was decided that Haddenham would declare their innings at the point the accident had happened, and that after tea, Ley Hill would also bat for 26 overs. Pick of the Ley Hill bowlers was Andy Rennard with 3 for 29, followed by Donald Petrie with 2 for 27 and Henry Sussum with 1 for 20. Keeper Nick Lee took 3 catches.
Ley Hill opened with their most experienced batters – Andy Rennard and Jon Lown. Rennard was dismissed for just 10 runs, but Lown stayed put and ended up 48 not out. Batter No 3 – Brad Norton – was dismissed for 38 but keeper Lee took over and was 45 not out. This meant that Ley Hill finished their 26 over innings on 159 for 2. Was it enough to avoid relegation??? Time will tell. The two wickets which fell were taken by M. Shah (1 for 31) and J. Kiely (also 1 for 31).
We understand that Freddie has broken a bone in his leg and will be in plaster for the next six weeks. We wish him a full and speedy recovery. A full score card for this match can be found if you navigate to “Information – Documents – Score Cards”.
