Ley Hill won the toss and skipper Kevin Phillips decided to bat. Despite having lost a number of players to the 1st XI whilst most of the regulars went to a wedding, he still felt confident of his team doing well and his confidence was not misplaced. Opener Andy Rennard scored 54 although his partner Iain Stewart was unlucky enough to go for a duck. A sparkling and quick 21 from Callum Wilson plus a really good 50 from keeper James Lagdon took Ley Hill to 111 for 3 when Stuart Crichton joined Lagdon at the crease. It was Crichton’s first game for Ley Hill since 2015 and he didn’t disappoint, scoring 64 runs before being run out. With some inspired running from captain Phillips and Joe Yerrell to finish the innings, Ley Hill ended up on 232-5. Best of the Ballinger bowlers was Lock with 2 for 22.
Ballinger opened with captain Hunting and his young team batted round him with vigour and determination. They found the speed of young Tom Veall too much for them however and he removed two batters before Phillips decided to bowl Wilson. He took 4 wickets quite quickly and this seemed to take the heart out of Ballinger, who ended up on 112-10. Most impressive batter was young Dominic Richie (aged 14) who came in at 11 and scored 25 not out. Wilson ended up with 4 for 41.
